Occupying an area of 140 hectares, NUIST now has a floor area of almost 679,000 square meters for various uses. The university boasts 27 experimental teaching centers2 of them are listed as the national demonstrations of experimental teaching centers, i.e. the Experimental Teaching Center of Atmospheric SciencesEnvironmental MeteorologyVirtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center of Atmospheric ScienceMeteorological Information. With a total collection of 2.33 million paper documents53 58 sub-, as well as 1,680,000 electronic periodicals1,900 paper periodicals, the library of NUIST has the most complete literature on atmospheric sciences among all the universities in China.
NUIST has a batch of key disciplines in both stateprovincial levelssome brandacteristic majors in ChinaJiangsu Province. There are now 57 undergraduate majors covering the 8 main subject categories, namely science, engineering, management, literature, economics, law, agricultureart. The doctor degree programs almost covering all the undergraduate majors. NUIST has establishedeffectively managed a disciplinary system of “macro meteorology”. The disciplines as Atmospheric Science, Environmental ScienceEngineeringSensor NetworkModern Meteorological Equipment have been approved in the first phase of the Advantageous Discipline Construction Program in Jiangsu Province. The subject of Meteorology ranks top in Chinaenjoys a distinguished reputation throughout the world. In recent years, on the basis of advantageous subjects, NUIST has established a harmonious discipline system of atmospheric science, marine science, information science, environmental science, managementbasic science.
So far, more than 80,000 students have graduated from NUIST. They win good reputations among the employers by their down-to-earth attitudeoutstanding capability. Many alumni have become well-known scientists, scholarssenior management staff homeabroad. Among them, there are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Royal Academy of Sciences, high-ranking leaders in the governmentsenior officers of WMO. NUIST won the First Prize in National Teaching Achievements Award. The students won the only Special Award in National Mathematical Modeling Contest----“Higher Education Press Cup”, the First Prize in National University Students “Challenge Cup” Competition, the First Prize in the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest, etc..
NUIST attaches great importance to scientifictechnological innovation. During the recent five years, NUIST has been actively taking part in more than 500 national programs including Program 973, Program 863, NSFC Program, National Social Science Fund Program, etc.. Besides, NUIST has also applied for over 1,250 patents. In 2015, NUIST was granted more than 130 National Natural Science Fund Projectsobtained sciencetechnology funds about 433 million RMB. In recent years, NUIST vigorously promotes the commercialization of research outputs, industrialization as well as construction of the university science park. It sighed cooperation agreementsconducted meteorological equipment development with China Huayun Group, American I. M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG)VAISALA Meteorological Measurements Technology Co., Ltd.. Hundreds of scientifictechnological rewards both on nationalprovincial levels have been awarded to the university, including the Special Awardthe first prize of National Award for ScienceTechnology Progress. In addition, international rewards like Award of Excellence of Scientific Achievement of SPIE, WMO NORBERT GERBIER-MUMM AwardBuchan Award of British Royal Meteorological Academy are also received. A number of research papers were published in the top ranked journals like Nature, Science, etc..
NUIST has established cooperative relationship with 48 famous overseas universitiescolleges from 15 different ries including the Yale University, the University of Wisconsin in US, the University of Hawaii, Florida State University, the University of Oklahoma, Texas A&M University, the University of Manchester, the University of Reading in UK, the University of Toronto in Canada, the University of Hamburg in Germany. NUISTup the Confucius Institute at the College of the Bahamaswas admitted to the programs of Chinese Government Scholarship, the Confucius Institute ScholarshipJasmine Jiangsu Government Scholarship. To date, the WMO Regional Training Centre Nanjing at NUIST has trained over 3000 senior meteorologicalhydrological personnel for 153 riesregionsbecome the world’s largest training center with a top quality of WMO.
Sticking to the guideline of opencollaborative development, NUIST will promote discipline construction, faculty development, talent cultivation, scientific researchinternational cooperation, to make NUIST a first-class key university in China.
Approved by the 45th session of WMO Executive Council in 1993, Regional Training Centre Nanjing was established with the facilities of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (formerly known as Nanjing Institute of Meteorology), and was inaugurated in 1994, is one of the early RTCs of World Meteorological Organization. In 2012, NUIST was appointed the sole training center of the UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee in its 44th session. Up to December 2022, RTC Nanjing has hosted almost 5,300 participants with its 210+ bi- and multi-lateral training events. On our trainee list are numerous scientific, operational and technical officers from 158 countries and regions. We are proud to say that RTC Nanjing is now among the most active members in WMO educational and training network.
From the very first training it hosted in 1990, WMO RTC Nanjing has been fully committed to capacity-building of meteorologists from NMHSs across the world, especially those from developing and least developed countries. Training programs of RTC Nanjing tap the quality educational resources from NUIST and fully take into account the priority areas of capacity building within WMO framework, and cater to the needs of meteorological services of the target trainee communities. The three-decade’s commitment has staged a panorama of training topics across an extensive spectrum from forecasts and public services, to disaster prevention and reduction, to climate change and renewable energies, and to administrative and operational management. RTC Nanjing is dedicated to knowledge sharing and connectivity. On its learning platform, which was launched after 2020, more than 250GB learning resources including lectures of almost 300 hours and topical lectures, courseware, and e-books can be accessed via internet visits.
The accolades NUIST’s international training received from World Meteorological Organization and meteorological services of represented countries and regions, enabling it to appear on the visiting itineraries of WMO leadership, Program directors and officers.
